Gavin Creel Remembered at Upcoming Broadway Memorial Celebration
Two months after Gavin Creel, a renowned Tony Award-winning actor known for his performances in "Hair," "She Loves Me," and "Hello, Dolly!," passed away at 48 from a rare form of cancer, a public memorial service is scheduled. It will be held at the St. James Theatre in New York City on Monday, December 2, at 4 p.m., People reported. Family and friends will honor his legacy, alongside an open invitation to the public. Attendees seeking admission details should email [email protected].
On December 3 at 6:45 p.m., all Broadway theaters in New York City will dim their lights, marking his significant contributions to the theater community worldwide. Creel, a celebrated songwriter, and singer, battled metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, a rare cancer, and spent his last days in hospice surrounded by family, including his partner, Alex Temple Ward.
Diagnosed in July 2024 and treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Creel's influence brought together friends and costars, with notable figures like Bette Midler, Sara Bareilles, and Lin-Manuel Miranda expressing grief over his loss.
Tributes flooded social media, with fond memories shared by Laura Benanti, who recalled longing moments in Creel's presence, and Ben Platt, who considered him his first idol. Colman Domingo described Creel as a "sweet man" whose kindness and humor brightened Broadway. With heartfelt responses, the community invited people to celebrate Creel’s bright legacy with applause and roses, honoring the unforgettable mark he left behind.
