Liam Neeson Reflects on Life After Quitting Alcohol
Liam Neeson, known for his role in "Absolution," quit alcohol in 2013. He reminisced about this decision, saying, "I wish I’d done it 20 years ago." In a recent interview with PEOPLE, he stated, "I never got sloshed; I never got drunk drunk ever. I was a jolly drinker."
However, Neeson realized that his drinking habits were becoming an issue. "At 6 p.m., I would open a bottle of wine, and after an hour, I’d finish it and just open another." This behavior led him to consider his role as a parent to his two sons, Micheál, 29, and Daniel, 28. "This isn't a good example for my boys, so I'm just going to quietly stop," Neeson decided.
Neeson first discussed giving up alcohol in 2014 with GQ, attributing his increased intake to the grief following his wife Natasha Richardson's death. "After she died, I was drinking too much," he explained. "I’d be on my second bottle of wine." Although he avoided hard liquor, he admitted his habits changed significantly after her death.
Despite giving up alcohol, Neeson prioritizes fitness. He maintains a gym routine on "most days." However, the former amateur boxer and action star is reluctant to share specifics about his workout. "I don't like saying exactly what I do," Neeson stated. "I’m so fed up seeing actors talking about what they do."
Neeson’s latest film, "Absolution," hits theaters on November 1. His transformation away from alcohol showcases his journey and commitment to healthier living, reflecting his role as a determined father and action star.
