Sam Asghari Defends Ex-Wife Britney Spears After Influencer Mocks Singer's VMAs Reaction to Sabrina Carpenter
Sam Asghari, despite no longer being married to Britney Spears, continues to stand by her publicly, US Weekly reported. The incident unfolded after Spears, 42, posted an Instagram video in response to Sabrina Carpenter's performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12. In her now-deleted video, Spears discussed Carpenter's space-themed medley performance, which blended her songs "Espresso," "Please Please Please," and "Taste." Notably, Carpenter paid homage to Spears during her performance by incorporating a snippet of Spears' iconic song "Oops!... I Did It Again."
After Spears' video post, influencer Michael Pavano shared a mocking reenactment of it on social media. Pavano's video, uploaded on September 13, sparked a backlash. Taking to the comments section the following day, Asghari, 30, expressed his displeasure by writing "Not cool 👎🏽." This sentiment resonated with many social media users who commented with similar remarks, such as "You're [sic] mean" and "Poor woman …. leave her alone."
Spears' original Instagram video included some puzzled commentary on Carpenter's performance, questioning the storyline of kissing an alien onstage and suggesting that she could have kissed a girl instead. Spears also expressed her affection for Carpenter, noting that Carpenter mentioned her on the red carpet, which she found cool and flattering.
Asghari and Spears, who married in June 2022 but divorced by August 2023, showed that despite their separation, Asghari remains a steadfast supporter. He has a history of defending Spears, evidenced by his 2023 reaction to the controversial TMZ documentary, "Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom," which detailed her life post-conservatorship. Asghari strongly criticized those who had shared Britney's story, declaring his indignation at the treatment she received.
Asghari, who proposed to Spears in September 2021, maintained through representatives even amid their divorce proceedings that he "has always and will always support" the pop icon. Since their divorce's finalization in May 2024, his ongoing public defense underscores this unwavering support.
