Cameron Diaz on Returning to Acting: Family Comes First
Cameron Diaz is opening up about her decision to return to the film industry after taking a significant break, PEOPLE reported. The actress, known for her lead roles in films like "Charlie's Angels," reflected on this transition at the Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit held on October 14, during a session with Katherine Power and Emma Hinchliffe.
Diaz, who will soon appear in new projects including "Back in Action" and "Shrek 5," shared that resuming her acting career aligned with the right moment for her family. Having spent an extensive period at home during the COVID pandemic, she explained that while it was a valuable experience, it was time to move forward. "After COVID, staying home eventually became our norm, but returning to acting seemed necessary," she said.
Since her last movie in 2014, a remake of "Annie," Diaz dedicated herself to family life, marrying musician Benji Madden in 2015 and welcoming their children, Raddix and most recently, Cardinal. Despite seeming to disappear from Hollywood, she emphasized that her career was far from over. "People assumed my career had ended, but I always believed otherwise, and it required a significant push for me to step back into acting," Diaz noted.
Her solution was not one-sided however; Diaz's venture back into the limelight had the full support of her husband Benji Madden. Madden encouraged this comeback, acknowledging her prior sacrifices and expressing his commitment to supporting her journey. "Benji was incredibly supportive, emphasizing it was time to allow me the opportunity to excel," said Diaz.
Ultimately, reclaiming aspects of her life outside the family front became her priority. "It was all about aligning with my passion – creating a family. I wanted this foundation to be strong before stepping back into other challenges," she elaborated. Diaz is driven by her passion both for acting and her dedication to family, reflecting a balance that she is now ready to achieve.
