Conan O’Brien Announced as Oscars Host: ‘America Demanded It’
Conan O’Brien is giving the public what they want. The former late-night host, aged 61, will emcee the 97th annual Academy Awards on March 2, 2025. This event will mark his first time hosting Hollywood's biggest night, PEOPLE reported.
"America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme," announced O’Brien about his hosting gig, humorously adding: "In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars."
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed excitement over O’Brien’s role. They stated they were "thrilled and honored" to have him as the host.
O’Brien has been described as the perfect individual to guide the global celebration of cinema. According to Kramer and Yang, he brings "brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise." His skill in connecting with audiences will enhance the ceremony, allowing it to honor this year's standout films and filmmakers.
In July, it was confirmed that Jimmy Kimmel chose not to return as emcee, which would have marked his fifth time hosting. Likewise, John Mulaney also opted out, according to sources. There were various names discussed for the role, including Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Dwayne Johnson. Reports throughout October noted these stars were approached to host the ceremony.
Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, praised O’Brien's selection, labeling him as a "preeminent comedic voice" with a career renowned for its distinctive humor. His inclusion places him alongside an iconic group of comedy legends who have held the position.
"This year’s Oscars will benefit from Conan's incredible wit, charisma, and mastery of live television," noted Oscars executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan. They anticipate an exciting, celebratory show tailored for Hollywood’s prominent night.
