David Corenswet's Weight Gain for Superman Role: A Personal Challenge
David Corenswet has openly discussed his physical change for the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn. In a recent episode of the "Manly Things (Sort Of)" podcast, he explained his mindset heading into the project.
"I wanted this film as a reason to gain weight," said Corenswet, 31. He aimed to bulk up significantly. "I thought I’d be happy at 210 pounds, but I peaked at 238. That was the high point."
Announced as Clark Kent in June 2023, Corenswet spoke about his long-standing wish to build muscle. "I've always felt too lanky," he explained. "I couldn’t fill out a T-shirt, and I lacked the physical presence I desired. Hitting 238 was fantastic. I want to return to that."
Despite enjoying the muscle gain, Corenswet faced challenges resulting from his rapid transformation. He humorously described donning an XL sweatshirt and feeling accomplished with the fit. "I didn’t fit into my pants anymore. I hadn’t adjusted to the weight change," he noted.
Comparatively, Henry Cavill, who portrayed Superman from 2013 to 2022, also underwent significant physical alterations for the role. Cavill, 41, recounted the intense pressure he experienced. "It came mostly from myself to get it right. There is no room for mistakes," he shared with Muscle & Fitness in 2013. During workouts, he frequently wrestled with his focus. "I often had to push back against those thoughts and keep striving."
In December 2022, Cavill announced he would step down as Superman, following discussions with Gunn and producer Peter Safran. "I will not be returning as Superman," he stated on Instagram. "After being told to announce my return in October, this news was tough."
For this new film, Rachel Brosnahan will portray Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor.
In May, fans glimpsed Corenswet’s transformation through a costume photo shared on Instagram, paired with a release date announcement. "Get ready," Gunn wrote with enthusiasm.
Superman is set to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025.
