Halyna Hutchins' Mother Claims Alec Baldwin Profits From Cinematographer’s Death
Olga Solovey, the mother of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, has decided not to attend the premiere of "Rust." This choice comes after her daughter's tragic death, US Weekly reported. "It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen," Solovey remarked in a statement to "The Hollywood Reporter" on November 19. "Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter."
Solovey expressed that Baldwin "continues to increase my pain" regarding Hutchins' death in October 2021. She claims the actor does not apologize or "take responsibility" for his actions. "Instead, he seeks to unjustly profit from his killing of my daughter," she added. "That is the reason why I refuse to attend the festival for the promotion of *Rust*, especially now when there is still no justice for my daughter."
The film "Rust" will premiere at the Camerimage International Film Festival, running from November 16 to November 23 in Toruń, Poland. Hutchins will be honored at the event, three years after her on-set death.
Baldwin was on the "Rust" set in New Mexico when a prop gun misfired, fatally injuring Hutchins, who was only 42 years old. Director Joel Souza, struck by the bullet, narrowly avoided life-threatening injury. Initially, Baldwin faced involuntary manslaughter charges in January 2023. The prosecution dismissed the case in April after Baldwin maintained his innocence, entering a not-guilty plea. In January, it was confirmed that Baldwin had again been indicted on involuntary manslaughter charges.
The First Judicial District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case in July in a Santa Fe courtroom. The judge sided with Baldwin's defense, which argued that evidence crucial to the case was withheld. "There is no way for the court to right this wrong," the judge stated, indicating that dismissal was the only suitable remedy.
While Baldwin's case was dismissed, armorer Hannah Guttierez-Reed is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for her involvement in Hutchins' death. She was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March and sought a new trial after the dismissal but had her motion denied in September.
