James Van Der Beek, Who Shares Six Kids with Wife Kimberly, Underwent a Vasectomy Before Cancer Diagnosis
James Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, who are parents to six children, have announced that their family is now complete following the birth of their youngest child, three-year-old Jeremiah. In a revealing interview with PEOPLE magazine, Van Der Beek, who has recently been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, shared his decision to undergo a vasectomy before his diagnosis to ensure that they wouldn't have more children. Reflecting on their large family, Kimberly, 42, admitted, "We didn't plan for such a big family; it just happened. Only one of our six children was planned."
In October 2024, Van Der Beek and his family were photographed at their Texas home, a spacious setting far removed from their previous residence in Beverly Hills. The large ranch feels like freedom to the actor, who treasures the relocation made back in 2020. While tackling the challenges of cancer, as well as dealing with numerous miscarriages over the years, the couple has developed a deeper appreciation for life amidst hardships. Kimberly emphasized the importance of savoring life’s moments and recognizing true presence.
Van Der Beek credited Kimberly and their children as his pillars of strength throughout their ordeals, affirming he couldn’t have persevered without her. Humor remains a significant component of their journey; while recalling a conversation with the children about his procedure, their youngest amusingly mistook the vasectomy for "vagina surgery," evoking laughter from both parents.
Despite the trials, Van Der Beek expresses gratitude for his family’s continuous support and remarked on his children’s resilience, though he light-heartedly acknowledged their insistence on referring to his illness as "butt cancer." With humor and love, the Van Der Beek family moves forward together, embracing every moment on their expansive Texas ranch, shared with chickens, dogs, and a pet bearded dragon named Sharla.
