Jessie J Diagnosed with ADHD and OCD
Singer Jessie J has disclosed her diagnosis with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), describing it as a transformative revelation that prompted her to re-evaluate her life, enhancing her self-love.
In an Instagram post, the 36-year-old "Price Tag" artist, real name Jessica Cornish, shared that she was diagnosed around three months ago, following the birth of her son, Sky Safir Cornish Colman. The arrival of her child significantly highlighted these conditions.
Jessie J refers to her ADHD as a "superpower" that has both empowered and occasionally overwhelmed her. She mentioned, "It has made me rethink my entire approach to life, from work habits to personal relationships."
Explaining the impact on her mental health, she stated, "ADHD is recognized for affecting behavior, manifesting in restlessness or impulsiveness," and described OCD as having "obsessive thoughts leading to compulsive actions that disrupt daily life," according to the NHS.
Reflecting on her childhood in east London, Jessie J reminisced about coping mechanisms she developed, such as cleaning her trainers with a toothbrush during stressful times and making extensive lists to avoid feeling that life was "crumbling."
The singer further explained the power of connection facilitated by social media, "Social media has given me the avenue to connect and find solace with strangers of kind hearts experiencing similar struggles, increasing my self-acceptance."
Acknowledging how this newfound clarity offered comfort, she expressed that the discovery of these conditions made previously unexplained feelings and behaviors easier to manage. Embracing her differences, she noted, "I’ve always felt slightly different, and finally, it all makes sense."
Jessie J values openness about her journey, urging others to share in this mutual support. She stated, "To all navigating these same paths, I extend my hand emotionally – because I need the support as much as you do."
Before concluding her heartfelt message, she encouraged others on their self-discovery journey. "Get to know yourself better through life’s unfolding chapters and embrace self-love. Our experiences don't define us, they help us evolve into fuller, more integrated versions of ourselves."
