Olivia Harrison Shares Insight into George Harrison's Special Relationship with 'Fifth Beatle' Billy Preston
Olivia Harrison explores the profound friendship between her late husband, George Harrison, and musical legend Billy Preston in the newly released documentary "Billy Preston: That's the Way God Planned It."
Billy Preston, the accomplished singer-songwriter and keyboardist, has had close ties with musical greats, partaking in sessions with the Beatles for their infamous albums "Abbey Road" (1969) and "Let It Be" (1970). Known to John Lennon as being "like a fifth Beatle," Preston established a significant bond with George Harrison, which flourished beyond the band's breakup in 1970.
This relationship is vividly illustrated in the documentary directed by Paris Barclay, premiering at DOC NYC. Barclay's film includes testimonials from those who knew both artists best, such as Olivia Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr, underscoring Preston's deep connection with Harrison.
In her own words, Olivia, 76, reflects on this unique synergy: "George’s alliance with Billy transcended the norm, grounded in an immediate recognition and certainty of each other's essence."
Their collaboration produced memorable moments, such as Preston's iconic Hammond organ performance on "Something." Harrison reciprocated by producing Preston's 1969 hit "That's the Way God Planned It," the film's namesake.
Post-Beatles breakup, Harrison and Preston's collaboration continued with Preston contributing to Harrison's acclaimed albums such as "All Things Must Pass" (1970) and his live album "The Concert for Bangladesh" (1971). Together, they created music that left a lasting footprint on the music world, despite personal challenges along the way. George Harrison's patronage also paved the way for Preston's solo album "Encouraging Words," which included the initial version of Harrison's famed track "My Sweet Lord."
"Billy Preston: That's the Way God Planned" pays homage to Preston's career and his unparalleled ability to elevate those around him, including music icons like Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and Barbara Streisand. Presented at DOC NYC, this festival showcases some of the most compelling documentaries, offering options for viewing in-person or streaming online from Nov. 21 to Dec. 1.
This documentary not only commemorates Preston's dynamic musicianship but also highlights the magical connection among celebrated artists that defined an era.
