Queen's Brian May Reveals Health Scares: Minor Stroke and a Heart Attack
Queen guitarist Brian May, aged 77, recently shared a concerning health update. On Wednesday, September 4, May revealed he suffered a "minor stroke" about a week ago while discussing his new documentary.
"The good news is that I can still play guitar after the last few days' events. Although it was in doubt because that little health hiccup happened suddenly about a week ago — it was a minor stroke, and out of the blue, I lost control over my left arm," May said, reflecting on the scary incident.
Discussing his treatment, May mentioned the "fantastic care and attention" he received from Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey, England. He lightheartedly recounted the ambulance ride with blue lights flashing. Choosing initially not to share the news to avoid an outpouring of sympathy, May explained, "I don't want my inbox cluttered" and assured fans that "the good news" is he's recovering well but grounded for now.
Submitting an update on his recovery, May noted, "I'm just doing what I'm told, which is nothing. I'm grounded; I can't go out, drive, fly, or raise my heart rate. But I'm good," humorously adding that airplane overflights could stress him out.
This isn't the first health scare for May. In May 2020, he experienced a heart attack while already in pain from a torn gluteus maximus muscle caused by gardening, PEOPLE reported. Despite his good health and active lifestyle, May recounted 40 minutes of intense chest pain, tightness, arm discomfort, and sweating – symptoms of his heart attack. Subsequently, he was fitted with three stents in his heart, which left him feeling strong and grateful for his recovery despite nearly facing death. He also underwent minor eye surgery in May 2021 and recalled almost dying due to complications from heart attack medication that led to a severe stomach hemorrhage, causing significant blood loss and debilitation.
