Remembering Matthew Perry: A Family's Mission to Honor His Legacy
Nearly a year after Matthew Perry's sudden death at 54 from a ketamine overdose, his family has found ways to honor his memory and continue his legacy, US Weekly reported. Perry's sister, Caitlin Morrison, and stepfather, Keith Morrison, shared insights about their journey since his passing during an interview with Hello! Canada.
Reflecting on Matthew’s impact, Caitlin described her brother’s remarkable ability to light up any room with his magnetic presence. She emphasized that people were drawn to him and cherished his every word. Caitlin also spoke of her bittersweet experience working as the executive director of The Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada, a project close to her heart, as it was rooted in something significant to Matthew.
Her involvement with the foundation has allowed Caitlin to keep Matthew’s memory vivid, as she steers the organization which aims to support individuals post-detox with essential services like housing, counseling, job training, and career placement. Continuing this work provides her solace, having the feeling of continuity with her brother’s presence.
Keith shared how the family aims to preserve Matthew’s dedication to supporting others in recovery. Despite the struggle with sobriety marking his life, his unforeseen death left a profound void. Keith explained that the establishment of the foundation is in alignment with what Matthew would have wanted – to contribute meaningfully to those fighting addiction.
Matthew's untimely death prompted a legal response addressing those responsible. His assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and associate Erik Fleming, among others, pled guilty to roles associated with distributing ketamine, facing legal consequences tied to Matthew's overdose. As the family copes with their personal grief, they hold steadfastly to fulfilling their loved one’s advocacy and altruistic ambitions.
