Algerian vlogger sentenced to 2 months in jail for hugging people on the street

An Algerian man, Mohamed Ramzi, in his thirties, has received a two-month prison sentence for his actions of hugging random individuals on the street. Although he aimed to spread peace and positivity, his actions were considered indecent behavior in Algeria, leading to public outrage and condemnation. This was reported by SSPDaily.

The incident stemmed from a TikTok video posted by Ramzi, inspired by a European vlogger known for similar social experiments involving public displays of affection. This particular form of behavior, however, is frowned upon in Algeria. Despite apologies from Ramzi, his video attracted significant negative attention, resulting in criminal charges against him.

Initially, Ramzi was acquitted of all charges by a local court. However, an appeal lodged by the prosecutors led to the case being referred to the Algerian Judicial Council. Upon further review, Ramzi was found guilty and convicted of indecent behavior for his hugging clip and 'display of indecency' for another video involving two girls wearing short skirts, one of whom had a visible tattoo.

The court's ruling mandated two months of imprisonment for Mohamed Ramzi, in addition to a fine amounting to 5 million dinars ($37,000).

Following the widespread outcry caused by his videos, Mohamed Ramzi expressed his remorse and issued an apology, stating his intention was merely to spread peace and love with his content. Regrettably, his endeavors failed to appease both his detractors and the judiciary.
