Gave Birth at Friend's House - She Sent a Bill and Wants an Apology
A woman recently sought advice on Reddit after recounting her unexpected birth story, where she went into labor prematurely and ended up delivering her baby on her friend's living room sofa. Despite having a birth plan, she found herself giving birth at her friend Ella's house during a casual movie night with their friend group, which consists of seven women aged between 26 and 32, some of whom have known each other since childhood.
The woman, who was 36 weeks pregnant at the time, experienced sudden and intense labor pains that quickly escalated. Due to the rapid progression, she was unable to move and an emergency call was made. With the help of an emergency medical technician (EMT), she successfully gave birth on the sofa, with her nurse friend Grace present while the others were asked to leave the room.
Following the birth, Ella, whose house was the venue, has been notably distant and requested the new mother to pay for a replacement sofa due to the damage caused during the labor. The woman mentioned feeling surprised but is willing to cover the costs, even though she feels unsettled by Ella's response. She explained that Ella was the only one who hadn't visited her after the birth and expressed that she felt guilty and overwhelmed by the situation.
In response to her post, various users suggested she should not only pay for the sofa but also talk directly to Ella to clear the air. One user advised paying in person to facilitate a discussion, while another mentioned that while labor timing is uncontrollable, the responsibility to reimburse for the damages falls on her. Additionally, another commenter shared a personal experience, suggesting checking with her insurance company to see if accidental damages like those from amniotic fluid might be covered.
Seeking advice, the woman asked how she could resolve the situation and address her friend's feelings, noting that her wife supported her and suggested she shouldn't feel guilty.
