Horror for scolecophobes: larvae fell on airplane passengers during the flight
Recently, a Delta flight was forced to turn around an hour after takeoff when larvae fell from the overhead compartment onto passengers sitting in economy class seats. SSPDaily tells about it.
This was reported by the Independent.
On February 13, the plane was carrying travelers from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, USA, when a passenger's suitcase with rotting fish was in the luggage compartment and opened, causing the larvae to fall on passengers and the plane to turn around.
After landing, all passengers were ordered to leave the plane, and the suitcase with the fish was placed in a bag for disposal. The plane itself also underwent a deep cleaning.
One user named Kelsey eventually wrote on X/Twitter about her experience on the flight: "Very nice to find out 2 hours into an 8 hour flight that rotten fish and maggots are hitchhiking with us."
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Kelsey said that Delta employees found the owner of the suitcase and detained him on the plane after the rest of the travelers had left the plane.
As compensation, the travelers were provided with 8,000 air miles, compensation for a hotel room, and a $30 meal ticket if they were delayed overnight.
Other passengers on the flight also wrote on Reddit about the situation:
- So I was on this unfortunate flight, lol. Me and my family were in the row right in front of the maggots. The woman sitting behind us told the flight attendants that maggots fell on her head. Ew. I turned around and they were spinning on the seat. However, they pushed us further forward
- One of our carry-on bags was next to the disgusting one, so at the end of the flight when I went to get it after a thorough inspection, the passenger in question was still sitting there and hadn't left the plane. So, I assume there will be some consequences, but it's not clear what. Also, apparently, the fish was wrapped in newspaper. Absolutely disgusting
In a statement to The Independent regarding the maggot incident, Delta wrote: "We apologize to the customers of Flight 133 AMS-DTW as their trip was interrupted due to improperly packed carry-on luggage. The aircraft returned to the gate and passengers were placed on an available flight. The aircraft was taken out of service for cleaning."
