I'm a Bridesmaid but My Hairstyle Infuriated the Bride – She Doesn't Understand
A bridesmaid experienced confusion and hurt when the bride reacted angrily to her decision about the hairstyle for the wedding. The bridesmaid had informed her friend that she intended to have "boho braids" but reassured her that they could be styled according to the bride’s wishes. Despite this, the bride, focused on a "uniform" appearance, was not pleased.
"I will be the only Black bridesmaid at the wedding and feel that most styles wouldn't be uniform by default. My natural hair is difficult to manage during day-long events, so I suggested braids for my comfort," the bridesmaid shared on Reddit’s 'Am I The A**hole' forum. Following this, the bride stopped responding to her messages and started venting to mutual friends, which left the bridesmaid puzzled and upset.
The bridesmaid further detailed how she had been supportive leading up to the wedding—planning the bachelorette party, setting up the bridal shower, and assisting with other wedding tasks. Yet, the bride believed she was being self-centered because of the hairstyle issue.
"Now I am unsure—should I forego the braids since it is the bride’s day or keep my appointment for the style that makes me comfortable, which can still be adjusted to her liking?" she wrote. In the comments, she mentioned her hair type is "naturally 4a-4b and very curly." "I didn't send a picture; maybe showing her would help clarify," she responded to someone who suggested that perhaps the bride didn’t know what boho braids looked like.
One commenter noted, "The bride seems focused on her vision and not considering her friends' realities. You should discuss it bluntly and ask what she means by a 'natural hair look'. Never damage your hair for someone's ideal event." Another agreed, "If I were the bride, I'd want my friends to be comfortable and happy, including their hairstyle."
