Man Discovers Gravestone Near Bedroom Door
A man has made a shocking discovery in his garden, uncovering a gravestone just seven feet from his bedroom door in his new home in New York. While exploring his property, he found the eerie marker under a thick pile of leaves and went on Reddit to share his grim find. "Found a tombstone on the property of my new house I just bought. It's seven feet from my bedroom door." he wrote. The headstone, inscribed with "C. Stadtmiller. 1872 - 1938," predated his house, which was built in 1958. "It's a stolen headstone, we figured it out," he later explained.
Research revealed that the gravestone belongs to Caroline Stadtmiller, who was buried at the First Methodist Church Cemetery in New York at age 65. Sharing an update, the homeowner continued on Reddit: "I'm calling the cemetery today to tell them I have it. To my surprise, they already sent the picture I posted to grave.com. The nicest thing since I posted this, six anonymous donations of flowers have been placed on this website for Caroline."
However, trying to contact the cemetery led to a disconnected line, prompting him to decide to visit in person. He said, "Now I'm going to physically go there to see if there's a stone on the grave, and if there's not, I'm bringing this tombstone to that cemetery."
Commenting on the unusual find, one Reddit user joked: "Congratulations you are the new owner of a ghost," to which the poster replied, "Pictures are always falling from the wall, but other than that, no noises or anything." Another user pointed out a potential legal benefit: "In some states, if there is a body buried on your land, it makes your property tax-exempt as you are technically a graveyard. Worth looking into." A third simply suggested, "Leave it, respect it, accept it."
