Mother Deems Daughter’s Clothes Inappropriate, Ex Criticizes

A mother faced confusion when her 14-year-old daughter bought clothes she found inappropriate. After expressing concerns over a pair of revealing shorts, her ex-husband accused her of damaging their daughter’s confidence.

As a teenager, testing the limits of fashion often meant making their parents uncomfortable. Super short dresses, crop tops, and heavily drawn-on eyebrows among other trends have led to many cringing parents who are presently guiding their children through similar phases.

One mother shared that her daughter, having her own spending money, ordered clothes online. "When the clothes arrived and I assessed them, I restrained myself from commenting on their appropriateness," she wrote on Mumsnet. She continued, "One dress was notably short and revealing, worn inappropriately to a family event. I refrained from commenting to keep her morale high, merely complimenting the pattern and color."

However, when her daughter attempted to leave the house in shorts that were both too short and too small, the mother intervened, suggesting they might be too revealing. When her daughter didn't change, she bluntly prohibited her from wearing them outside, leading to a dramatic reaction and a refusal to speak to her mother. Her ex-husband intervened, labeling the mother's comments as "cruel" and accusing her of crushing their daughter’s self-esteem.

Recalling her own experiences, the mother noted this phase of fashion rebellion as a common aspect of adolescence. "As a responsible adult, I believe I have the right to veto overly inappropriate attire outside the house," she added, questioning if she had been unreasonable.

The incident sparked varied opinions from other parents online. One agreed with the trend of wearing clothes too small, while another questioned the necessity to critique women's attire when men often wear very little during hot weather.
