Emma Flint's Journey to Discovering She is Abrosexual
Emma Flint, 32, realized she identified as abrosexual after years of fluctuating attractions. The-term, which she only discovered at the age of 30, describes a sexual orientation characterized by a fluid attraction to different genders.
Opening up about her abrosexuality, Emma faced cruel remarks from friends who questioned the legitimacy of her sexuality. Comments like "When did you decide this?" and "Is this even a label?" emerged, casting doubt on Emma’s experiences. Unsurprisingly, these individuals are no longer part of her life. Speaking to the Metro, she emphasized that being transparent about her identity has alleviated her anxiety regarding her feelings.
In the 90s, the awareness of diverse sexual identities was limited. Growing up, Emma knew about being straight, gay, or lesbian, and anything beyond these labels was dismissed as "made-up." The societal slow adaptation to diverse sexualities lingered until she discovered the term abrosexual, thanks to US-based LGBTQ+ advocate Zoe Stoller.
Zoe’s explanation on TikTok, where she described abrosexuality to her 74,000 followers, marked a turning point for Emma. Emma described it as a "lightbulb" moment, as she realized her fluctuating attraction did not align with being either strictly bisexual or pansexual.
Throughout her life, Emma's shifting feelings frequently troubled her, leading to periods of self-doubt. She admitted she often "scoffed" at herself for her uncertainty. Some days she identified as a lesbian; other days, she connected more with bisexuality, illustrating her sexual fluidity. She expressed this fluid nature didn't change her capacity for romantic love: She loves the person rather than their gender. Yet, she still encounters people who urge her to "pick a lane," unable to comprehend her fluctuating identity.
Despite criticism and misunderstanding, Emma found solace in her new-found identity. She now feels "seen" and advocates for the term abrosexual to be recognized as a valid, static identity – not just a trend.
Emma hopes that with society’s growing awareness, abrosexuality will soon be normalized, occupying its place within the spectrum of acknowledged sexual orientations.
