I'm Overworked, But My Boss Still Doesn't Care
A woman has become frustrated with her job after her boss's dismissive seven-word comment made her feel unappreciated. Despite consistently going the 'extra mile' at work, her boss's reaction recently confirmed her worst fears.
While putting in extra effort isn't inherently bad, allowing yourself to be exploited creates significant issues. This woman had dedicated months at a new job, staying up late and making herself available at all hours to demonstrate her commitment. However, despite her hard work and chaotic schedule, a simple remark on LinkedIn from her boss caused her "heart to sink."
The incident occurred during her company’s "big departmental awards" event. One category, "New Rising Star," awarded a new staff member who had made notable contributions. Her boss, leading the committee, indicated there was a chance she might win due to several nominations in her favor. However, the award ultimately went to a colleague from another team. When the colleague celebrated their win on LinkedIn, the woman's boss replied, "Nobody deserved that award more than you." This remark disappointed the woman deeply, suggesting her diligent efforts had gone unrecognized.
Comments on her Mumsnet post showed sympathy, with many saying her boss was likely trying to support the winning colleague. Nevertheless, they advised the woman not to overextend herself beyond the confines of her contract. One commenter noted, "Now you’ve learned not to run around after your boss like a lapdog and to avoid being available at all hours. That stance doesn’t make you a better employee but rather someone who’s easy to exploit." Another added, "A more considerate comment might have been, 'You had some tough competition, well done!' but your boss was probably just thoughtless. Try not to take it personally."
Ultimately, this experience serves as a warning to balance hard work with personal wellbeing and caution against exposing yourself to exploitation in the workplace.
