Man Appalled as Self-Checkout Machine Demands 20% Tip Despite Him Doing All the Work
A man was left baffled and frustrated when a self-checkout machine prompted him to leave a tip of up to 20% while he was doing all the work, raising questions about who would actually receive the extra cash. Visiting a water park in Hungary, the man stopped at an on-site kiosk for refreshments, only to find the machine asking for a tip ranging from zero to 20% after he scanned his items.
He shared a picture of the prompt on Reddit saying, "A water park in Hungary asking for a 0-20% tip for a self-serve kiosk that sells popsicles and drinks." The post sparked controversy about tipping culture, with many users expressing their irritation.
One commenter noted that, at least, the option to select 0% was prominently displayed, a rarity in some places where terminals start at 18% and higher. Another user recounted a similar experience at a Cubs game, where a worker admonished them for not tipping a self-service machine.
A recurring theme was the influence of American tourists who tip more generously than local customs dictate. A user mentioned a shift in South America where typical tips have risen from 10% to 15-20% owing to American practices. Another suggested the tipping software might be uniformly used across different environments, whether for self-service or when employees physically assist customers.
To cap it off, one user joked, "Robots need a living wage too."
