Man Went Metal Detecting for Fun – Now His Garden is a Crime Scene
A man used a metal detector in his garden to search for interesting finds but ended up terrified after uncovering something sinister. The Reddit user, expecting coins or jewelry, instead found human remains, prompting a call to the police.
Describing the shocking discovery, he wrote: "Local police and detectives are here. Called the state police who are getting the medical examiner's office involved. Human bone fragment + handgun + concrete slab = murder." The Massachusetts resident noted how the police cordoned off the garden for investigation, leaving him to witness the unfolding events from his window. Although he knew his home was built in 1890, the land’s previous history was unknown to him.
After several days of investigation, the police downgraded the site’s status from a potential crime scene to a burial ground. The man updated: "It's no longer a murder site. Dead person, yes. Murder, a possibility. But they are calling it a grave site." He mentioned finding a bracelet engraved with the initials "GRH," suggesting it could be from someone with those initials or from GR High school. GRH, it appeared, was buried with their favorite gun.
Once the police concluded their investigation, they allowed him to continue his search. "They gave us permission to continue on our own," he noted, adding details of new discoveries. Within an hour, they found a large bone and a matching cufflink. Aware that reporting further finds could stop their search again, they opted to collect items first.
"Just a few pieces of jewelry and a large bone today. Looks like a hip bone," he shared, excitedly planning to flip a concrete slab the next day, hoping to get ahead of impending rain. He also mentioned: "They gave me the gun back to keep!" Additionally, the state police took a DNA swab from him but not his family, investigating whether the bones belonged to the same person. "Fingers crossed," he mused about additional potential findings under the concrete.
Others chimed in on his post, one expressing hope for closure for the victim’s family: "Although sad for the victim and circumstances, it will hopefully provide closure for someone." Another humorously remarked on the situation's improbability: "This is too much. When true crime and metal-detecting obsessions collide!"
