Struggling Veteran Forced to Sell Jewelry Finds Hope Through the Kindness of Others
Donald, turning 91 this month, faced a dire situation when his landlord increased the rent, leaving him unable to pay his bills and care properly for his wife, who suffers from dementia. Desperate for funds, the aging Air Force veteran began selling his cherished jewelry at a local pawn shop.
Donald’s plight first attracted the attention of Jenelle Marie, who worked at U.S. Gold & Pawn. Known as "the sweetest old man you could ever meet," Donald's story became widely known when Jenelle decided to act. Reacting to the kind veteran's predicament, Jenelle started a fundraiser, instantly pulling in $1,300 (£1,020). The heartwarming news quickly spread on TikTok, garnering over 7.2 million views and sparking donations of more than $200,000 (£157,000).
During one visit to the pawn shop, while Donald tearily worried about a meager $13.80 debt, Jenelle interrupted him, saying, "How about this? I have something for you. This is a little gift, I know your birthday is this month so we put together a little fundraiser and we came up with some money for you." The emotional Donald was elated, exclaiming, "I could kiss you, god bless you." He expressed his gratitude profusely, unable to believe the generosity extended to him, indicating that he couldn’t allow such extreme kindness.
As the video continued to circulate online, viewers were overwhelmingly moved. Comments like "He totally lit up and was so appreciative" and "A veteran should not be struggling. Thank you for helping this man" typified the response, creating more momentum for the fundraiser. Upon receiving the enormous support, Jenelle revealed dreams of using further donations to find Donald a more affordable living space, and ultimately ease his daily struggle.
Close to $228,360 (£179,000) has been collected on GoFundMe pages for Donald, ensuring not only the precious sanctuary of his remaining jewelry but also a new life brimming with the communal kindness he embodies.
