Stunned Woman Discovers 50-Year-Old Crisp Packet: A Warning for Us All
A remarkable discovery by Janet Midwinter in her garden in Sennen, Cornwall, has left her and the community in shock, the Express writes. Janet stumbled upon a 53-year-old Crispi Crisps packet, dating back to the 1970s, after returning from a dog walk. She recounted the moment, saying, "I saw the crisp packet by my garden gate. I usually pick bits and pieces up and put them in the rubbish. But I thought, 'That's an old crisp packet'."
Believing the discovery serves as an environmental warning, Janet stated: "It's a little ragged around the edges, but if one crisp packet can last that long, what are we doing to the planet?" Now framed, the packet is displayed at a recycling point in Sennen Market, serving as a powerful reminder of plastic's persistence.
"I want people to see it and realize how a crisp packet can be in the ground for 53 years," Janet said, emphasizing the need to recycle and reduce plastic usage. "It's unbelievable that it is so old. Let’s try and get rid of the plastic where possible."
Crispi Crisps, once manufactured by Meredith and Drew, were sold from the 1960s to the 1990s and were later taken over by United Biscuits, which also owned KP Snacks.
Following the find, environmental activist Emily Stevenson from Beach Guardian noted, "There is a sad, dark tale behind these finds. These plastic packets have been in the environment for decades."
Retired geologist Dr. Andrew Beckley, who discovered a Bronze Age settlement inspired by clues from Channel 5's Time Team, pondered the longevity of such artefacts, adding another layer to the significance of Janet's discovery.
Janet's midwinter find is a reminder for everyone to consider the long-lasting impact of plastic pollution and to take active steps toward environmental preservation.
