Unusual name spelling – people say it sounds like eye drop brand
A woman revealed that her unusual middle name has frequently drawn comparisons to "eye drops" or knock-off makeup, despite it being a traditional name with sentimental value. The issue originates from her parents' unique spelling of "Eileen" as "Eyelene."
Alternative spellings for names can sometimes seem unorthodox. For instance, Alex can be spelled Alecks or Alix, and Ashley can appear as Ashleigh. However, some names suffer in appearance with unconventional spellings, creating a risk of seeming absurd.
This woman’s middle name, shared on Reddit, aligns perfectly with this concern. Spelled Eyelene, the name originated from her grandmother, whose birth certificate featured this version due to the attending midwife's mistake. The woman admitted, "My middle name is Eyelene. No joke. Every other letter is an E. The story goes that the guy who delivered my grandma didn't know how to spell Eileen, so that's how he wrote it on her birth certificate. I do like that it was passed down to me, but I have to admit that I don't write it out on forms unless I have to!"
Commenters on the post reacted with humor and some derision; one compared it to an "eye drop" brand, even suggesting a slogan, "Use Eyelene, for that new eye clean," while another joked about a connection to the makeup brand Maybelline with, "Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybeyelene."
Despite some mockery, other comments reflected a more respectful tone, praising the name's historical and familial significance. One user said, "It is a great story, and it has history, so it is okay. Also, it is a middle name, so you don't have to use it often, and teachers don't have to say it to call attendance."
Another practical suggestion was offered: "If that story is true you shouldn't have to endure someone's illiteracy throughout life. Keep the name Eileen and have it updated via legal name change to an actual legitimate spelling."
