When is the best time to plant tulips: you can plant them not only in the fall
Tulips, with their bright colors and elegant blooms, are a welcome addition to any garden. SSPDaily told you when is the perfect time to plant them to see their splendor in spring.
Traditionally, tulips are planted in the fall, which allows the bulbs to survive the winter in the soil. Fall planting also reduces the risk of diseases that can damage both the leaves and flowers. For example, planting tulips in November helps to strengthen them.
However, spring planting can still yield good results. First, it is very important to pay attention to the air temperature, which should fluctuate between 9-10°C. It will stabilize in late March or early April.
When it comes to planting tulips in the spring, choose a location with plenty of sunlight while providing protection from strong winds. If they don't bloom as lushly as you expected, don't worry. Next spring, you will see abundant flowering.
There are three options for planting tulips in spring:
- Plant them in pots and then transplant them into the ground
- Plant them directly in the ground
- Use large pots without the need for further transplanting
To plant tulips properly, start by preparing the bulbs and soil. The bulbs should be firm, dry, free of cracks and mold. Add compost or manure to the soil to increase the mineral content, and level the surface of the bed with a rake.
Dig holes about 5 cm deep for small bulbs and 10 cm deep for large bulbs. Place them in the holes with the sharp tips facing up and cover them with soil.
Do not forget to water the tulips so that they are firmly anchored in the soil. In addition, periodic fertilizing with potash, phosphorus or nitrogen fertilizers can promote healthy growth.
