Woman discovered living inside shop sign, claims it as an "old safe spot"
A 34-year-old woman from Michigan was discovered living inside the familiar signboard of a local Family Fare supermarket, astonishing both the police officers and onlookers. When asked about her peculiar choice of accommodation, the woman revealed that it was her long-known "old safe spot." SSP reported.
Police came across the woman in the attic-like space within the Family Fare sign. Surprisingly, she had been residing there for over a year, equipped with the essentials of everyday living. The sign, measuring approximately 5ft (1.5m) in width and 8ft (2.4m) in height, possessed a door that enabled access from the roof.
With a coffee maker, computer, bedding, phone, and even a printer in tow, the woman appeared well-equipped for her unconventional dwelling. She claimed that the space, known to her family but a secret to most others, had served as her dwelling place.
Upon being discovered, she replied with mirth, "Not anymore," hinting that her once-secret sanctuary was no longer concealed. However, she did not explain why she had chosen such an offbeat home for herself over the past year.
Clad in black attire with ski goggles perched on her head, the woman's unusual living arrangements earned her the nickname "roof ninja" from one of the police officers present. Amused by her lifestyle, an officer remarked, "Tell me that ain't cool." To which she replied, "That's true."
During the interaction, the curious officers inquired about their access to the roof. The woman humbly divulged that she gained entry through a ladder, but humorously noted that they would not possess the skills of a "roof ninja."
The police were alerted when contractors working on the roof stumbled upon an extension cord leading to the intriguing hideaway. Upon finding her, two officers requested the woman to open a small door situated at the back of the sign.
As officers reflected on the bizarre discovery, Brennon Warren from the Midland Police Department confessed, "I honestly don't know how she was getting up there. She didn't indicate, either." Since no ladder was found, it can be speculated that the woman managed to access the roof through alternative means, potentially climbing from behind adjacent stores or neighboring retail establishments.
