Woman Mocked for Leaving Gym to Eat Candy Explains Why You Shouldn't Judge
Actor Ruby Valentino, living in London, has become determined to challenge people's preconceived notions after she faced ridicule for leaving her gym class to get candy from a vending machine. Valentino, who has type 1 diabetes and relies on insulin to control her blood sugar levels, experienced a sudden drop in glucose during the workout. In order to quickly replenish her levels, she rushed to the vending machine for some jelly tots. However, a group of women from her class mocked and questioned her, unaware of her condition.
Valentino decided to share her experience on TikTok, posting a video that highlights the lack of understanding surrounding hypoglycemia and the need for immediate access to food. Her video quickly gained traction, receiving nearly 70,000 likes since its upload in July.
In response to the negative comments, some TikTok users offered support and encouragement for Valentino, emphasizing the importance of kindness and empathy towards others facing health challenges. Many individuals admitted their own lack of awareness about the presence of sugary snacks in gym vending machines until now.
The National Health Service (NHS) notes that moderate exercise like walking or cycling can cause a drop in blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycemia. Conversely, activities such as running can result in an increase in glucose levels, known as hyperglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, difficulty focusing, blurred vision, and shakiness, which can worsen without prompt sugar consumption.
Valentino, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during childhood, emphasizes the vital role of immediate access to sugar after exercise, as a lack thereof can have severe consequences. She reveals that she has experienced a seizure due to low blood sugar in the past. By addressing the stigma surrounding diabetes, Valentino hopes to raise awareness about the condition's impact on individuals and emphasize that it is not diet-related, but rather an autoimmune condition.
Though initially hesitant, Valentino started sharing her experiences with diabetes on social media platforms, particularly on Instagram (@ruby_valentino). She reveals that the response she has received has been overwhelmingly positive. Through her posts, she has found a community of individuals living with type 1 diabetes, creating meaningful connections and fostering support.
Valentino's story serves as a powerful reminder not to judge others without understanding their circumstances. Her hope is that by sharing her journey, she can contribute to a more compassionate and inclusive society.
