Woman shows off £5,800 teeth transformation after family told her 'don't smile'
Amber Murphy, a 26-year-old retail manager from New Hampshire, USA, has completed a remarkable journey to a new smile after years of living with "crooked, crowded, and discolored" teeth. Her own family, along with school bullies, had cruelly suggested that she "shouldn't smile," a comment that deeply affected her self-esteem and perception of the world.
Starting at the age of 23, Amber decided to take control of her life and invested $7,500 (£5,800) in comprehensive dental work, including braces, extractions, cleaning, fillings, and upkeep. "The first four months were the absolute worst, but after that, it was smooth sailing," Amber remarked about adjusting to her new braces. She expressed being more responsible about her diet and oral hygiene throughout the three years the braces were in place. This drastic change resulted in significant improvements not only to her dental health but also to her self-confidence.
Reflecting on her past experiences, Amber shared, "People were not kind to me. I remember every face of every kid who ever bullied me for my teeth." The lingering impact of these negative experiences shape how she views life and people, propelling her to make a significant change. "It’s never too late for someone to choose themselves. The braces may have had pokey metal bits that made life uncomfortable, but now it's incredibly easy to floss!"
Her newfound confidence shines through despite online trolls, and Amber highlights, "I smile so much more now and I don't even think about 'the before'. I was beautiful then and I’m beautiful now!" She clears a powerful message: "It doesn’t matter how old you are, what you look like, if you’ve ever gone to the dentist—you are worthy of taking on this journey! Don’t let anyone discourage you from doing what you want and taking control of your desires. Braces changed my life for the better, and it’s quite emotional thinking about it."
Amber's transformative journey serves as a motivating example for those battling self-esteem issues and bullying. "From my younger days, I never smiled in photos because I was 'ugly'. I want to hug my younger self. Be kinder to yourself and don’t listen to bullies."
With her braces now removed and a new sense of confidence, Amber cherishes her smile and looks forward to further dental improvements like teeth whitening. For the time being, she's happily enjoying her transformed smile.
