Woman transforms her garden into a gothic heaven—growing dark plants only
Amidst the suburbs of Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada, a unique transformation has taken place. Chloe Hurst, a 29-year-old graphic designer, has unleashed her obsession with the color black and converted her backyard into a mesmerizing gothic-style oasis. This transformation, which has been an ongoing project costing approximately $1,000 per year, has fulfilled a childhood dream for Hurst. This is prepared by SSP.
Growing up, Hurst fondly remembers assisting her mother in tending to vibrant, colorful flowers in their family garden. However, deep within her, she always harbored a longing to cultivate a garden adorned with black blooms. Today, her dream has fully materialized as her outdoor space showcases an array of intriguing dark flora. From black petunias to lilies, tulips, and even mondo grass, Hurst has painstakingly nurtured her plants, sourcing them locally from nurseries.
Driven by a desire for a lush landscape, Hurst has not limited herself to just a few unique plants. Alongside these striking flowers, her gothic garden boasts an assortment of dark shrubs, sweet potato vines, and perennials. Over the course of six years, she and her husband have invested around $6,000 to curate an enchanting outdoor retreat.
When asked about the inspiration behind her gothic garden, Hurst pins it on her love for shows like "The Addams Family" and "Dark Shadows." Surrounded by the serenity of her mysterious sanctuary, she finds immense joy in these ethereal, moody surroundings. Contrary to misconceptions, she insists that her affinity for the macabre is not born out of sadness or depression; rather, it reflects her genuine self and brings her a deep sense of fulfillment.
Naturally, Hurst's masquerade of darkness extends beyond her backyard. The interior of her home serves as a reflection of her unique aesthetic. Adorned with bone decor, various shades of black, and moody wallpapers, it is a living testament to her gothic sensibilities. However, she admits that her husband, not sharing the same affinity as she, has had to adjust to the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that envelops their home. Nonetheless, she harbors dreams of transforming their living space into a haunted, Victorian-style haven in the future, further embracing her desired ambiance.
Through social media platforms, particularly Instagram, Hurst has managed to attract a growing following of over 218,000 individuals captivated by her distinctive "goth garden" ways. Her unique expression of artistic beauty has undoubtedly found resonance with numerous like-minded individuals.
