Damian Lewis Honors Tradition by Herding Sheep Across London’s Bridge
Actor Damian Lewis participated in a centuries-old homage by herding sheep across the River Thames last Sunday, AP reported. This event is part of a tradition where citizens granted the honorary title "Freeman of the City of London" could historically bring livestock over the river toll-free.
The annual London Sheep Drive saw more than 1,000 freemen donning black hats and red cloaks, including Lewis, who sported his grandfather’s wool coat and carried a crook as he led the herd across Southwark Bridge.
Renowned for roles in "Band of Brothers," "Homeland," and "Wolf Hall," Lewis expressed delight in the event, describing it as "fabulous." Invited by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, an ancient trade guild from the 12th century, he saw the day as a celebration of a unique British tradition. Master Woolman of the guild, Manny Cohen, mentioned that this past practice was revived around 15 years ago and now serves as a vital charity fundraising occasion. Other historical rights related to the freemen, like carrying unsheathed swords in public or being escorted home when drunk, remain discontinued.
