Speed-Eater Consumes 2 Pounds, 7 Ounces of Hot Sauce in 3 Minutes
Spicy speed-eater Mike Jack faced a major challenge while aiming to break a record for consuming hot sauce in three minutes. The Canadian YouTuber achieved an impressive 1.12 kg (2 lb 7 oz) of hot sauce at the Guinness World Records HQ in London. To put that in perspective, the total weight is more than two soccer balls, each weighing around 450 grams.
To prepare for this ambitious attempt, Mike loaded two bottles of sriracha sauce into a bowl and equipped himself with a teaspoon. Encouraged by his wife and coach, Jamie, Mike eagerly began scooping the spicy sauce as quickly as possible.
After the attempt, he humorously reflected on the experience, stating: "A lot of people say, ‘Your butt must burn a lot after you did that challenge.’ I’ve actually never experienced burn-butt before." He jokingly attributed his endurance to a genetic mutation, calling it his "superpower."
Mike set this record on the same day he achieved the fastest time to drink a Capri Sun (with a paper straw) in just 21.71 seconds. His fascination with spicy food began in college when he sought out increasingly hotter sauces. Eventually, he started using condiments made from extremely hot peppers much like others would use ketchup.
His YouTube channel, Mike Jack Eats Heat!, took off after friends noted that videos showcasing hot pepper consumption had become trendy. He explained, "I ate my first one and I did pretty good; it was hot but I thought I could eat more. I just kept making videos, eating more and more to see how many I could eat." In the process, he discovered that some challenges were recognized as Guinness World Records titles. This inspired him to research records he believed he could break.
While his videos gained popularity, Mike noted that many viewers question his motivation. "A common question in the comments during my Guinness World Records attempts is why I do it," he shared. "I just respond, ‘Why wouldn’t you want to break a Guinness World Records title?’"
At the conclusion of his three minutes, Mike noticed his bowl was significantly emptier, with a distinct line marking the remaining hot sauce. He laughed, acknowledging he had experienced "flavor fatigue." An essential part of his strategy involved visualizing one of his favorite desserts—pumpkin pie—as he consumed the sauce.
Guinness World Records Adjudicator Juliet Dawson described Mike's attempt as one of the most "intense" record-breaking efforts she had witnessed. The record required a minimum of 300 grams, a target Mike exceeded by more than triple.
"That’s more than I thought I would do," Mike admitted. "I’m glad I beat this record, ‘cause that was a nasty one. That was rough on the body, for sure." In addition to this record, Mike possesses multiple eating records and previously held the title for the fastest time to drink a bottle of hot sauce at 8.56 seconds.
