World's Largest Pupusa Made at D.C. Festival
A collective of approximately 80 Salvadoran chefs from the Washington, D.C., area gathered at the Fiesta D.C. festival. Their goal was to make the world's largest pupusa.
Fiesta D.C. is an annual event that celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. During the festival, the chefs initiated their Guinness World Record attempt on a Saturday morning along Constitution Avenue.
The impressive pupusa, a flat cake crafted from corn flour and filled with cheese and pork, measured 20 feet, 2 inches in diameter. This size earned the prestigious Guinness World Records title.
The earlier record, held by a pupusa that was 18 feet wide, was made in El Salvador in 2022.
Chef Iris Veronica Jimenez, from La Casita Pupuseria, remarked to NPR, "We've always called D.C. the District of Pupusas. With around 270 pupuserias in the DMV area, it was natural for us to come together. We aimed to create this massive mega-pupusa."
The monumental pupusa was cut into portions and shared with festival-goers on Saturday and Sunday.
