Murder Suspect Apprehended After Falling through Ceiling
Authorities captured a murder suspect, Deario Wilkerson, 20 after he fell through the ceiling of a building where he had been hiding, NPR reported. The U.S. Marshals Service apprehended Wilkerson on Monday, several months after issuing a warrant for his arrest on charges of first-degree murder and reckless endangerment in connection with a fatal April 2 shooting in Memphis, Tennessee.
The task force investigating Wilkerson’s location tracked him to a residence in Memphis. When officers searched the property, Wilkerson tried hiding in the attic but fell through the ceiling, facilitating an easy arrest. No injuries were reported, and Wilkerson was taken into custody without further conflict.
This arrest marks an end to the investigation that began in early April when a shooting left one person dead and another injured. According to the Shelby County District Attorney's Office, Wilkerson was among three individuals apprehended for the incident. The scene erupted when Memphis police, responding to a disturbance call near an apartment complex, heard multiple gunshots.
They discovered Troy Cunningham, the victim, with a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head on the sidewalk near Peres and Merton Street. Additionally, gunfire hit a passing vehicle with two female passengers, one of whom was shot in the shoulder and taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Wilkerson initiating the confrontation by lunging at Cunningham. The two other suspects reportedly shot at the victim as he attempted to flee. Wilkerson is then seen on camera running toward Cunningham and picking something up off the ground before leaving the scene. The other suspects were arrested in May 2023, around the same time the warrant for Wilkerson was issued, but took longer to locate and apprehend him.
