An Ontario library recently announced the return of three Roald Dahl books that had been overdue for almost 40 years. A patron brought back these treasured stories that would have incurred over $1,000 in late fees. Fortunately, the Parry Sound Public Library no longer charges fines for overdue items.

The returned books included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, and The BFG. According to Cayla Norrie, the programming manager, these books had been removed from the library's system. Therefore, librarians reviewed the publishing dates to determine how long the books had been missing.

Library staff assessed that the books were nearly four decades overdue. In a lighthearted social media post, the library shared, "Did you know — we don’t charge overdue fines anymore? If we did, this poor patron would have owed $1423.50 ($1,055.49 U.S.) for returning these books almost 40 years late! Better late than never."
